The Story of Jonah and the Whale The Wonder Book of Bible Stories Logan Marshall At this time another prophet, named Jonah, was giving the word of the Lord to the Israelites. ![]() They follow suit and show repentance to God. The King of Nineveh heeds Jonah’s warning and immediately dons sackcloth and ashes, instructing the Ninevites to do the same. Jonah then travels to Nineveh and warns the city’s inhabitants that they must repent or risk having their city destroyed in 40 days. After his rescue, Jonah offers a prayer of thanksgiving where he praises God, ending with the prophetic statement, "Salvation comes from the Lord” ( Jonah 2:2–9). The Bible’s plain teaching is that, yes, Jonah was truly swallowed by a whale (or a great fish). God then commands the whale to release Jonah onto dry land. The book of Jonah recounts the story of a disobedient prophet who, upon being swallowed by a whale (or a great fish) and vomited upon the shore, reluctantly led the reprobate city of Nineveh to repentance. This piece of Scripture also shows Jonah’s humility and obedience to Jesus, which helps him atone for his earlier refusal to listen to God. The moment when, according to the Old Testament, Jonah was spewn forth by the whale, having remained lodged in its stomach for three days and three nights. Being banished from God’s sight represents what happens to Christians who abandon or disobey God. ![]() While in the body of the great fish, Jonah laments being “banished from sight” ( Jonah 2:4). And my earnest prayer went out to you in your holy Temple.” Jonah 2:7 captures Jonah’s desperation: “As my life was slipping away, I remembered the Lord. While in the body of the whale, Jonah prays to God and asks for forgiveness. God rescues Jonah from drowning by providing a “huge fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights” ( Jonah 1:17). Then, the ocean miraculously becomes calm. Later, fearing all is lost, the sailors toss Jonah overboard into wild seas ( Jonah 1:15). ![]()
